It's All About the Mooring!

June 2016 - It's All About the Mooring!

Before we got her sailing we needed a place to keep her. We needed to build the mooring for Fool's Path. We needed to build something strong, so we overbuilt. We didn't need her moving down the lake in big winds. (This may have happened and I will totally get into that on another post. It is a hilarious story! Well, we can laugh about it now. )

Be sure to do a lot of research on the type of mooring that you need for your boat. This is what works for us in a freshwater lake. We set the mooring blocks in about 6 1/2 feet of water about 70 feet off the break wall.

Supplies for mooring blocks:
- About 30 bags of Sakrete concrete mix
- Water
- 2 x 8 for form
- plywood
- rebar
- PVC pipe about 4"

After a year we added:
- 2 ground helix screws Ground Helix (Yes, this has to do with the story that I mentioned above so use these when you set your mooring!)

Kevin and his Dad (Don) built the form and mixed the concrete. The rebar is going through the PVC pipe to wrap the chain around which will hold the mooring ball. Just let us know if you want more information about this. I plan on adding pictures of us getting the blocks in the water next.

In this picture, you can see the rebar going through the PVC pipe.

Once these are dry they will be heading into the water. Till next time! ~ Brook and Kevin
