So, now we have a boat!

June 2016 - So, now we have a boat!

One of the first things that we did was paint the bottom. We used VC-17. This is a freshwater boat and it is what was used on the boat before. We didn't have the energy to completely sand down the bottom to use anything else. It works great for us. We have found that it is a two-person job. We always mix the copper and paint into a liter water bottle so we can close the lid. This paint dries extremely fast so you don't want to have a lot of it exposed to the air at a time. I would pour a little of the mixture in a paint pan and Kevin would roll it on. I would keep adding to the pan as needed. We were able to do our whole bottom with one can of VC17.

Our next project was to clean the Lewmar winches. We were concerned that we were going to need to replace them because they were really hard to turn. Each winch cost about $250 so a replacement was out of the question. Instead we purchased Jasco Mineral Spirits, cheap 4 pack of toothbrushes, and Phil Tenacious Oil which was about $25 to clean all four Lewmar winches vs $1000 to replace.

This stuff is awesome!!

Dirty, gross, sticky blah!

With a little bit of elbow grease, they shined right up!

Those were really the only two major things we needed to do on the boat. We just needed to get the mast stepped and the rigging corrected so we could sail.

Till next time! ~ Brook and Kevin
